THIS year Joburg Water's annual water festival is moving, from Zoo Lake to Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown. But it still promises to be loads of fun for everyone.
The third time it is being held, the festival runs from 21 to 27 April. It will be officially opened by Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Buyelwa Sonjica and Johannesburg Executive Mayor Amos Masondo.
Organised by Joburg Water, the festival aims to spread awareness about the importance of water and to create a platform for the City's water utility to communicate important water messages to the public.
It is a follow up to National Water Week, which is celebrated between 27 and 31 March. The Joburg event will end with a concert in Newtown on Freedom Day, Thursday, 27 April, featuring Malaika, Ntando and Y-fm DJs.

Tappie will take part in the week-long activities
During the festival a range of educational activities will take place, including exhibitions by the provincial government's Sci-Bono science centre that will involve water experiments and some of the centre's science and technology programmes.
"Educational and entertaining activities will take place," explains Jameel Chand, Joburg Water's communications and marketing manager. These include the Tappie Road Shows, which will travel to about 30 city schools. Learners will be taught how to conserve water and there will be water safety demonstrations.
As part of the road shows, learners will be able enter competitions related to water, submitting compositions of water-related songs and poetry. Prizes will be awarded to the winning pupils and the winning schools.
At Mary Fitzgerald Square, a double-storey marquee will be erected, with the City's revenue department on the ground floor for members of the public to query their accounts.
The festival will reach boiling point on corporate day, when employees from Joburg Water, as well as from other City departments and utilities, agencies and corporate entities will take part in various competitions, such as water drinking, water tasting and "bucket on the head".
