TO celebrate its second birthday, as well as mark Human Rights Day, Constitution Hill is hosting an Open Day on Tuesday, 21 March.
Entertainment is planned, with activities for youngsters and children ranging from music to games to poetry. Through BUA, participants will use poetry to talk about their rights in a programme entitled Poetry on the Square. Got something to say? Everyone is welcome to speak from the "public soap boxes" that will be set up at Constitution Square.
BUA is a programme set up to encourage young people to investigate issues of democracy, social justice and freedom through poetry.
Multiculturalism programmes will focus on the youth, through interactive games and activities. The aim of the programme is to give young people an understanding of the different games that are used as a means of socialisation across cultural divisions.
The day aims to highlight the multi-cultural nature of South African society, through getting youngsters to play indigenous games such as diketo, morabaraba and kgati, among others.
"Although some are no longer commonly played today, they were an important means of socialisation in all the different cultures," explains Danielle Melville, the programme manager. "The objective of the programme is to build a truly non-racial society, whereby the youth learn about and appreciate other people's cultures."
She says games highlight the fact that every child has a right to practise their own culture in an open, democratic society.
Throughout the day there will be workshops on instrument creation and compilation of music for children, as well as an introduction to all the activities in the Children's Room.
According to a press release, the Children's Room is aimed at educating children between the ages of three and 12, by bringing to life the Children's Bill of Rights in a unique African, tactile, fun and interactive way.
Other activities include two sessions of lekgotlas, where adults can hold discussions with former prisoners at the Women's Jail. The first session will start at 10am and the second at 2pm.
The programmes will continue throughout the day, and guided tours will take place every hour from the Visitors' Centre, between 9am to 4pm.
Bookings for family picnics and lunch can be made at the Old Fort coffee shop or by contacting Constitution Hill on 011 381 3100.
