Masondo looks set for
another term as mayor

Amos Masondo has been put forward as the ANC's mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, but the City council will elect the first citizen when it meets on 16 March.

AMOS Masondo looks set to serve another term of office as the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg when the City council opens its first meeting on Thursday, 16 March.

Masondo was elected as the city's mayoral candidate by the African National Congress (ANC) during a National Working Committee meeting held on Monday, 13 March.

The new mayor will be elected during the council meeting. Members of the mayoral committee and the newly appointed councillors will also be announced and introduced to the house.

Masondo was appointed the City of Johannesburg's first executive mayor in December 2000 and, during his five-year term, dealt with issues of poverty, unemployment, lack of access to housing and urban decay.

Born in 1953 and educated in Soweto, Masondo has a long history as a trade unionist and politician and was a founder member of the United Democratic Front. He was elected an ANC member of the provincial legislature and served as Gauteng MEC for health until 1998. He was political adviser to Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa until his appointment as executive mayor of Johannesburg.

According to Aletta Suping, a City of Johannesburg spokesperson, the council speaker and the City's chief whip will also be elected during the council meeting.

The ANC was the out-right winner in the municipal elections held on 1 March, scooping 62 percent of the votes in the City of Johannesburg. It won 136 of the 217 seats. The Democratic Alliance took 59 seats, with 27 percent of the votes.
