Strong medicine for
Klipspruit West Clinic

The City council is putting R5-million into upgrading the Klipspruit West Clinic, which eventually will be able to cater for 500 people a day.

EXPANSION of the Klipspruit West Clinic is almost finished, and is expected to be completed by May. So far, the inside walls are up and window frames have been installed.

The clinic, in Region 6, is one of several healthcare facilities being upgraded in Johannesburg. Work on the revamp began in November 2005, and the clinic has been closed until construction is finished. Services that were offered at there are available at the library for the duration.

It offers basic healthcare services such as health education, HIV/Aids counselling and treatment for tuberculosis. As part of the upgrade, four new consulting rooms are being built, adding to the clinic's existing three consulting rooms; as well as emergency rooms, two doctors' rooms, a reception area and a room for HIV/Aids counselling.

Because of its size, the clinic could not cater for many people, but when the upgrade is completed it will be able to serve about 500 people a day.

According to Jabu Tshabalala, the deputy director of the City's health department, Johannesburg had injected R5-million into upgrading the clinic. "The money will include quality improvement of facilities at the clinic."

She said that the clinic was not the only one to undergo a revamp. "Many have been upgraded for the community to have better health services."

QR Malinga Constructors, a local company, is doing the construction and the company has employed 13 local residents to help.

"People who are participating in the construction and development of the clinic will be awarded with certificates that will enhance their opportunities in the job market within the construction industry," said Tshidi Mphahlele, the ward committee manager.

The clinic will be officially opened in June.
