ASPIRING bridal wear designers better get out their drawing boards as the deadline for submissions for this year's Bridal Africa's Young Designer Award is just a fortnight away.
All entry forms with sketches, technical drawings, fabric swatches and accessory recommendations must reach the organisers by Friday, 24 March, accompanied by a R50 payment for each design.
The award runs in conjunction with Bridal Africa and is an ideal entry point for designers wanting to make their mark in the fashion industry. Bridal Africa, a leading bridal exhibition, takes place at Gallagher Estate, and everything a bride-to-be could need or want to plan a wedding is on show.
There will be more than 100 stands at the exhibition, including flowers, catering, entertainment, photographers and travel agents to advise on honeymoon destinations. Daily non-repetitive fashion shows are also planned, where future brides can pick up pattern and fabric ideas.
Last year the award was won by 22-year-old Eric Malaka, a third-year fashion design student at the University of Technology.

The 2005 finalists in the Bridal Africa Young Designer Award
Organisers say that this year the revision of the four categories allows for even more creativity from designers. The compulsory category is fantasy or avante garde; the ethnic bride, traditional bride and bridegroom categories are optional. Designers are urged to pay special attention to the headdresses in the female design categories to complement their garments.
In the first judging stage, 20 semi-finalists will be selected and interviewed. Thereafter the finalists will be narrowed down to 10, who will be expected to make up their competition garments according to the sketches they submitted.
The competition is open to all African citizens who are 30 years old or younger, except established designers and staff or their relatives of NichePro and Ford Promotions.
The winner will be announced at a gala dinner at Gallagher Estate on Friday, 12 May. Bridal Africa takes place on 13 and 14 May at the same venue and tickets, costing R50, can be bought at the door.
