BECOME an opera buff in just 10 minutes – and raise money for a good cause at the same time.

The annual Wits Hospice black tie gala, Laugh and Dine Winter Wonderland, is back. This year singer Rory Rootenberg will team up with Shaun Smith to gallop through a hilarious performance of the opera Carmen in 10 minutes.

Rootenberg, best known for his performance as the Phantom in the South African production of Phantom of the Opera, will also perform a compilation of songs from his show Highlight 11.

The gala dinner is on at the Intercontinental Sandton Sun and Towers in Sandton on Wednesday, 14 June at 7:30pm.

Master of ceremonies is comedian Soli Philander of Liriekeraai fame, while Sunday Times columnist David Bullard will turn his talents to auctioneering.

Donated items to be auctioned for the hospice include necklaces, sports stars' clothing and paintings.

Some 400 guests attended the event in 2005, and organisers are hoping for more this year.

Sponsors include Intercontinental Sandton Sun and Towers, Brandhouse, Distell, Nestlé Pure Water, Franz Grabe Flower Couture and Tschbonisa.

"Laugh and Dine is just one of many events by Wits Hospice to raise funds," says the hospice's project development manager, Desre Murray.

Tickets are R750 a seat or R7 500 for a table of 10. To book, contact the hospice office on 0861 467 7423.
