ALTHOUGH the country's biggest dance festival took place in Johannesburg only a few months ago, organisers are already calling for entries to next year's festival.

The next FNB Dance Umbrella will take place in 2007 from 23 February to 17 March and all those interested in presenting a work are invited to begin submitting their entries.

A platform for budding dancers and promising choreographers, the event is sponsored by a number of local and overseas organisations. Besides First National Bank, sponsors include the Johannesburg Development Agency, the National Arts Council and the Gauteng department of arts and culture.

The main programme of the festival, which usually features professional choreographers, will take place at the Wits Theatre in Jorrissen Street. Other venues around Johannesburg will also be used for the rest of the programme.

The schedule includes the Stepping Stones Programme, which focuses on youth and community dance groups, as well as showcasing young choreographers.

The Phillip Stein Grant, named after the founder of the Dance Umbrella festival in recognition of his contribution to the development of contemporary dance in South Africa, will also be awarded to the two most impressive choreographers.

The recipients of the two 2006 grants, Mdu Mtshali and Constance Kau, will present new works produced with the aid of the grant at next year's festival.

Deadline for submissions is 15 September and the contact persons are Georgina Thomson, Sifiso Kweyama or Charmaine Monareng on 011 482 4140 or 011 482 5179.
