LOOK in the mirror and look out the windows at this year's "Mirrors and Windows" women's day lunch in Newtown.
"Mirrors to see ourselves and praise ourselves for what we have achieved as women and, windows to look at the opportunities that await us," says Annie Williamson, organiser of the event, which is sponsored by the City of Johannesburg, the Transnet Foundation, the Newtown City Improvement District, and the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival 2006.
It promises to be an afternoon of superlative women's pampering. It happens at 1 Central Place in Newtown on 11 August, Women's Day, of course.
Lunch of Moroccan and Malay food will be served by the Gramadoelas Restaurant across the square. Wine, no, "endless wine", will be supplied by Elbows Up! Entertainment will be supplied by the Tanzanian Tumblers, stilt walkers and fire-eaters, and 2005 Idols winner Karen Kortje.
The serious stuff comes from networking guru Helen Nicholson in the form of a networking tool with "Your Elevator Speech", which teaches you to introduce yourself in 40 seconds; the keynote address is from Monhla Hlahla, CEO of the Airports Company of South Africa. And it's all pulled together by mistress of ceremonies Leanne Manas of SABC Morning Live fame.
But there's more. At 4pm you'll get a guided walk through the World Press Photographic Exhibition at Museum Africa. At 5pm you're invited to the Afronova Gallery in Newtown for a sundowner and to watch a fashion show and photo exhibition honouring women.
It's all part of the annual Women in Arts Festival which will run from 9 to 12 August in Newtown. The festival, now in its fifth year, is sponsored by the City and the Transnet Foundation and gives a platform to women artists in dance, theatre, photography, poetry, fashion and music.
You won't go home empty-handed. You'll receive a goodie bag worth R750 which includes a rose-encrusted sugar spoon by jewellery designer Jenna Clifford, a crystal key ring, 10 percent off a major car service from Car Service City, a body product from Babor Cosmetics to the value of R120, chocolates from Prue Leith, and 50 percent off any treatment at the Hands On Treatment day spa in Craighall Park.
And you might be in line to win a R10 000 travel gift voucher sponsored by Transnet Foundation, in the lucky draw, as well as three prizes from Jenna Clifford and a product hamper from Babor Cosmetics.
But the best prize of all is one that everyone wins: a donation of R200 from your ticket price will be given to Usindiso Ministries shelter in Albert Street in the CBD. The home cares for 90 abused women and their children. The donation will be used to fund a hospice for the HIV/Aids-infected women, and to upgrade the Little Fish Nursery School.
Tickets are R1 000 per person, or R10 000 for a table of 10. It works out at R50 per person, with your R200 donation to the shelter, and your R750 goodie bag.
Phone Annie Williamson on 082 900 5357 or click to book online before 20 July.
Williamson says 150 tickets have already been sold, of a possible 350 seats. "The response has been good - we are very happy."
