Traffic fine system down

Urgent maintenance work means that the web-based traffic fine system of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department's traffic will be unavailable for the next few days.

June 28, 2006

By Anish Abraham

THE Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department's online traffic fine system will be temporarily unavailable for about the next three days, due to maintenance work.

The innovative, web-based system was launched in October 2005 on the City's e-services website and allows City motorists to check up on all outstanding traffic fines, summonses and warrants of arrest.

The system came about as part of metro police's efforts to improve relations with motorists and to decrease the number of calls being placed to the City's call centre, Joburg Connect, to enquire about outstanding traffic fines.

"The Online JMPD Traffic Fine system is temporarily unavailable due to enhancements. If you need to contact us urgently, please contact our Call Centre, Joburg Connect," said Leoné Pretorius, web manager of the City's e-services website.

According to Pretorius, the online traffic fine system is the third most-used feature on the e-services website, after account enquiries and the online map service.

"Since going live in October 2005, e-services registrations have doubled and the online traffic fines section has an average of 11 850 hits a month," she added.

The web service is just one part of a much broader Integrated Information Management System, developed for the metro police by Bryanston-based IT firm, 2Big Mobile.

Once up and running again, city motorists can access the service from the "Traffic Fines: Outstanding Summonses and Warrants" section on the City's e-services website.

According to Pretorius, users can access the service with a username and password, while those new to the site can register to use the service with their ID numbers.

For information regarding outstanding fines and summonses, residents should contact Joburg Connect, on 011 375 5555.
