The colour of safety

The latest leg of the City's Winter Safety Campaign invites children to tackle the issue of fire safety through colouring in.

June 27, 2006

THE City of Johannesburg is encouraging all young citizens to take part in a colouring-in competition, in an effort to raise further awareness of its Winter Safety campaign.

The competition, which runs from 15 June to 16 July, is only open to citizens of the City. The competition can be found in community newspapers as well as on the City website.

"Our focus is on the prevention of fires through the misuse of matches, candles and paraffin and gas stoves, and also how to cope with the cold weather and hypothermia," said Bev Swartz, brand manager for Johannesburg.

Apart from colouring in a section of the advertisement, the entrants will also have to mention safety issues they learnt from Papa Q.

Papa Q was introduced in February 2004 to enable the City of Johannesburg educate pre- and primary school pupils on various safety issues, as part of the Qaphela Campaign. Qaphela means "Be Careful, Pasop, Ingozi".

To ensure maximum exposure for the Winter Safety Campaign, Joburg has also placed advertisements on several billboards across the City.

"In addition, a strong public relations campaign is in progress, including interviews with several City officials on radio stations to increase awareness."

The City's emergency management services are running a number of educational programmes to people in the informal settlements on how to prevent fires.

The problem of fires in winter is especially prevalent in Johannesburg's informal settlements, where the urban poor rely on burning coal fires or paraffin heaters to keep warm in shacks made of highly combustible materials.
