Fluid emotion on canvas

On at the Johannesburg Art Gallery before it hits the Grahamstown arts festival, Mo(ve)ment is an intimate synergy of art and dance which explores the creative process of painting on many levels.

A ONE-OFF performance-art piece, Mo(ve)ment, blending art and dance, is set to take place at the Johannesburg Art Gallery on Tuesday, 27 June.

The piece, by painter Tali Farchi and dancer Benno Hübner, is a preview of what this duo will be presenting at the national arts festival in Grahamstown in July.

Mo(ve)ment is, according to curator Prince Dube, "an encounter of visual art and modern dance". The performance at the Johannesburg Art Gallery is being sponsored by the Netherlands Embassy.

As Farchi paints, with the work projected on a large screen, Hübner dances on a stage. "The two artists challenge and inspire each other in a playful, passionate and, at times, intimate duet to music ranging from classical to hip hop," says a gallery press release.

In Mo(ve)ment, Farchi emphasises the physical act of painting as a means of communicating visually, expressing pure emotion directly on the canvas.

Hübner responds to both the different styles of music and the painting, creating a duet of colour and movement. This interaction sets up a dialogue, which moves from conversation to conflict and then resolution.

Instead of just seeing a result, the audience witnesses the actual creative process. The result is a multi-disciplinary performance. "Mo(ve)ment is something different – it has three artworks in one," says Dube.

Farchi, who was born in Haifa, Israel, runs her own production studio, specialising in animation. She was part of the team responsible for animation work in the In Mokum staat een huis exhibition put on by the Joods Historisch Museum. This work won the Berhard Cultuurfond-Prijs in 2002.

Hübner, who hails from Zwolle in the Netherlands, studied at the Dance Academy in Arnhem as well as at the Amor de Dios school in Madrid. He has created multi-disciplinary theatre pieces for BNO productions.

Teachers who have participated in the Johannesburg Art Gallery's recent training workshops will also attend the performance, so they can use what they learn in the classroom, according to Dube.

In Grahamstown, the Dutch company will launch Mo(ve)ment goes African, a joint project with South African musicians.

The gallery, on the corner of Klein and King George streets, Joubert Park, is open on Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 5pm. Entrance is free.
