Puppet multi-media
show explores women's experience

Explore women's experiences and desires through an eclectic combination of puppetry, music, video images and shadows at The Dance Factory in Newtown.

June 22, 2006

By Tabisa Mntengwana

JOIN the Paper Body Collective puppeteers and movement specialists in their latest multi-media show, Residue, on for three performances this weekend at The Dance Factory in Newtown.

Recently performed at the World Festival of Puppetry Art in Prague, the 40-minute performance by the Cape Town-based group is a journey through the deep spaces of feminine memory.

The Paper Body Collective is made up of artists from diverse backgrounds. Its works explore and celebrate the complexity of women's experience and desire within a South African context.

Residue is directed by Wits drama graduate Aja Marneweck and performed by Tali Cervanti, Vaneshree IIngham, Jacqueline van Meygaarden and Aja Marneweck.

"The use of puppets, music and video images is meant to give the audience a better understanding of the storyline, while using their own imagination," says publicist Suzette le Seuer.

"The live music creates aural intersections of sound while the video and shadows extend the range of images," says a company press release.

Music and sound is arranged by West African musician Prince Alfredo, viola player Jeanette Claassens, and sound engineer Kriek.

The performance on Friday, June 23 starts at 7.30pm, Saturday, 24 June at 6pm and Sunday, 25 June at 2.30pm.

Tickets are available from Computicket at R46.50 for adults, R24.50 for students and pensioners and R14.50 for under 15s.
