THE City pulled out all the stops in a clean-up operation on Johannesburg Water's Northern Farm, on the border of Diepsloot.

The clean-up – part of the Letsema Programme, a communal tradition whereby members of the community help each other with projects too difficult for one family – was also intended to educate the local community about caring for the environment and making use of the services offered by City utilities.

On the morning of Friday, 9 June, staff from Johannesburg City Parks set about cutting the long grass, while Pikitup collected all the rubbish and litter, and Johannesburg Water provided refreshments.

Other City departments like the emergency management services and housing department were on hand to answer questions from the community.

"[This] was to introduce the different levels of service delivery in the area and alert residents about the role they can play in keeping their environment clean," said the assistant director for project implementation Area A housing, Albert Langeveldt. Area A incorporates Johannesburg's Regions 1 and 2. "It was also an opportunity for the utilities to introduce themselves to the people."

Calling for co-operation between the residents and the City departments, Ward 96's community liaison officer Nelson Mphahlele said, "We are here to help the people and the people must help us."

While Mphahlele was pleased about the outcome of the clean-up, he was already looking to new projects, including a mobile clinic and a satellite police station.
