KANYE West, one of the world's most admired hip-hop artists, will be jetting to our shores soon and fans can catch his only Joburg concert at the Coca Cola Dome in Northgate on Tuesday, 11 July.
The 29-year-old musician will be performing songs off both his albums on the tour and in true hip-hop style, his concert will feature a live band, back-up singers and a troupe of dancers.
West initially spent many years behind the scenes as producer and songwriter for big artists like Janet Jackson and Alicia Keys until a car accident in October 2002 got him to rethink his life and his passions.
With his jaw still wired shut from the injuries he sustained in the accident, he recorded his first single Through The Wire. The song won him a four-record deal with Rockafella records and when his first album College Dropout finally hit the shelves, more than 400 000 copies were sold in the first week.
His second album Late Registration earned him 10 Grammy Award nominations, and in some categories he even found himself competing alongside his own protégés like John Legend. West went home with three awards for best rap album, best rap song for Diamonds From Sierra Leone and best rap solo performance.
West continues to produce music for some giants of the music industry, under his own record label, GOOD Music, an acronym for Getting Out Our Dreams. Fans can look forward to his next album entitled Graduation, which will be released in October 2006.
Tickets to the concert are available at www.computicket.com and prices range from R111 to R293. Edgars Club Members and staff can buy tickets for R175 on presentation of their membership cards.
