Miss Earth SA
to be announced

The 2006 winner of Miss Earth South Africa will be announced at a gala dinner in Johannesburg on Saturday.

THE judging is over and the big wait begins in anticipation of the announcement of who will be Miss Earth South Africa 2006.

The title will be presented at a gala dinner in Johannesburg on Saturday, 8 July, with 5FM DJ Elana Afrika as MC.

Held for the first time in 2004, Miss Earth South Africa is the local leg of the international Miss Earth pageant aimed at highlighting environmental issues.

"For the past six weeks the finalists have been involved in projects related to nature conservation, such as cleaning up the Moroko Dam in Soweto, tree planting and numerous other projects," says director of Miss Earth South Africa, Catherine Constantinides.

The purpose of the event is to empower young women to become involved in green issues and environmental problems, she adds.

The competition also gives young up-and-coming designers an opportunity to design a dress for the winner to wear at the International Miss Earth competition in Chile later in the year. The particular design should be inspired by the country's beauty: its environment, wildlife, people, history and diverse culture.

At the gala event, the 22 finalists will be wearing designs by well-known South African design houses like Sun Goddess and Claris.

Sponsors for the pageant include Sun Goddess, SA Fusion, Loxion Kulca, China Express, Malaysia Airline, Ivory Free Game Lodge, Sigma, Mugg and Bean, Kollonade, Game Trackers, Moyo, and the Market Theatre.

"There are a limited amount of tickets available to the public," says Constantinides. For tickets and more information, call 082 505 0664.
