A SELECTION of contemporary paintings entitled New Paintings –showing the diversity in the work of emerging South African artists – opens on Sunday, 23 July at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.
"Basically the exhibition will showcase the complexity of the language of painting," says curator, Storm Jansen van Rensburg. "It is a cross-section of the diversity of practice evident in contemporary South African paintings."
Colbert Mashile's art will be on show at the Johannesburg Art Gallery
Contemporary South African artists, no longer constrained by apartheid, are freer to follow diverse strategies and idiosyncratic avenues than ever before, says a press release from the Johannesburg Art Gallery, and much of the work employs an eclectic mix of graphics, commercial media and language.
Artists on display include Ryan Arenson, Conrad Botes, Jan-Henri Booyens, Dineo Seshee Bopape, Tom Cullberg, Dorothee Kreutzfeldt, Kudzanai Chiurai, Moshekwa Langa, Mustafa Maluka, Colbert Mashile, Tracy Payne, Johannes Phokela, Deborah Poynton, Tanya Poole, Themba Shibase and Dinkies Sithole.
A full-colour catalogue, with essays written by critic Virginia MacKenny, will be available for the duration of the exhibition.

The gallery is on the corner of Klein and King George streets, Joubert Park, and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
New Painting
"New Painting", curated by Storm Jansen Van Rensburg, is an exhibition of contemporary work by established and emerging South African artists. It showcases a younger generation of artists who work either exclusively or sporadically in the field of painting.
"New Painting" is a response to the resurgent focus on the painted image both locally and internationally. Prominent examples include exhibitions such as the "The Triumph of Painting" at the Saatchi Gallery in London and "Expanded Painting" at the Prague Biennale. "New Painting" is a cross section of the diversity of practice evident in contemporary South African painting.
Originally commissioned by the KwaZulu Natal Society of Art (with a grant from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund), the show has been exhibited at the UNISA Art Gallery in Pretoria. Janse van Rensburg states that "surveys such as these can positively contribute to the deepening of debates around the nature and substance of South African art making".
A full-colour catalogue, with leading essay by well-known critic Virginia MacKenny, will be available at the Johannesburg Art Gallery for the duration of the show.
