IT'S time for the annual Discovery 702 Walk the Talk competition again, and this year's event on 23 July is set to be even bigger and better than before, attracting a host of celebrities, sports people, businesspeople and government officials.
Entries for the various walks are now closed.
To ensure safety of both the contestants, spectators and Joburg's drivers, the tour organisers have roped in the Metro Police to man roadblocks along the route, cutting off traffic as groups of walkers cross intersections.
Starting from Marks Park Sports Club in Emmarentia, the event features five-, 10-, 21- and 42-kilometre walks, which will take contestants through Emmarentia, Greenside, Parktown, Parkhurst, Parkwood and Parkview, before returning to the starting point.
The walks for the various distances start at 6.30am; 7.30am; 8.30am and 10.30am respectively.
Among the more recognisable contestants pencilled in for this year's feature are former cricket boss Ali Bacher, Comrades Marathon legend Bruce Fordyce, boxing promoter Rodney Berman, South African football head Raymond Hack, jazz legend Hugh Masekela, cast members from local soapie Isidingo and members of local band, Watershed.
It was recently announced that former Indian cricket player, Kapil Dev, as well as present Proteas' vice-captain Jacques Kallis, would also take part in the Walk and Talk competition.
More than 31 000 people are expected to participate in this year's event, the ninth since its inception. According to the organisers, a percentage of all entry fees will be donated to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
For a measure of added fun, top local performers like Denim, Louise Carver and James Stewart will entertain the contestants and spectators.
