    Final ballet
    season features favourites

Back by popular demand, two programmes - Hamlet and Who Cares? - will be the main draw cards for the South African Ballet Theatre's final season in Johannesburg for the year.

THE South African Ballet Theatre will begin its final season of the year with the return of a particular favourite - Hamlet - the ballet, a production that conveys all the passion and drama of Shakepeare's tragedy.

Also lined up is a triple bill, featuring George Ballanchine's Who Cares?, alongside two pieces by South African choreographers Gregory Maqoma and Veronica Paeper.

The South African Ballet Theatre's season is on at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre from 8 to 24 September.

Hamlet, choreographed specially for the South African Ballet Theatre by Kevin Greve, premiered at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre in 2003 and proved to be one of the most successful productions in the theatre's history.

"So many people keep coming back to us and asking if we could reshow Hamlet and Who Cares? so we have decided to give audiences what they want," says Jacob Mosehla, the theatre's publicist.

Hamlet is filled with scenes of murder, suspense and foolishness. Although originally a play, the ballet captures all the drama through the movements, the costumes, scenery and music.

Kim Bergh, who danced the role of Hamlet in the 2003 production, will again take the lead.

On the nights Hamlet is not performed, a triple bill has been lined up, featuring Ballanchine's piece, along with dances choreographed by Gregory Maqoma and Veronica Paper.

Maqoma, who is famed for his work in contemporary dance, has just returned from the Pushkin Theatre in Moscow where his ballet Neon Flight premiered. The work is expected to receive the same positive response here that it did in Moscow.

Veronica Paepers will present Drie Diere, an interpretation of a poem by the great Afrikaans poet, NP Van Wyk Louw. Two special performances of this ballet will be held on 4 and 5 September to mark the centenary of the poet's birth.

Tickets to evening shows are R168, but opening night tickets to Hamlet are selling at half price. Shows held during the day are R65 and tickets are available at Computicket . There is a 10 percent discount for block bookings of 10 or more.

The South African Ballet Theatre ends the year off with a season of The Nutcracker at the Pretoria State Theatre. For more information contact 011 877 6898.
