Kapil Dev to Walk the Talk

To add to a record number of entries, the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk marathon is gaining more exposure as international sportsmen like Kapil Dev join the long list of celebrities and sportsmen taking part.

LEGENDARY Indian cricketer, Kapil Dev, will be joining local celebrities and government officials during the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk to raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, the official charity for this year's event.

Dev, a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, will be taking part in the event on 23 July together with South Africa test batsman, Jacques Kallis and fellow Laureus Friends and ambassadors Cynthia Chaka, Baby Jake Matlala, Deshun Deysel and John Robbie.

The event will feature five-, 10-, 21-, and 42-kilometre walks that will take participants from Marks Park Sports Club through the suburbs of Emmarentia, Greenside, Parktown, Parkhurst, Parkwood and Parkview, before returning to the starting point.

The Discovery 702 Walk-the-Talk is a partnership between Discovery, Radio 702 and the City of Johannesburg.

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, an international charity organisation that uses sport as a tool for social development and upliftment in disadvantaged communities, will receive a R10 donation for every person completing the five- or 10-kilometre walks.

"It is a great idea and I am really thrilled that I will be there to take part. It should be great fun and a fantastic way to raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The South African foundation is one of the most active and successful in the world and is doing a magnificent job in helping underprivileged young people throughout the country," says Dev.

"Kapil Dev is a cricket legend. He scored over 11 000 first class runs in all, so he is no stranger to running. We are more than happy to let him walk this time," says the chairperson of Laureus South Africa, Morne du Plessis.

"Kapil is a dedicated member of the Laureus World Sports Academy and has worked around the world for the cause. We are delighted that he now joins us in South Africa for this great event."

Youngsters from Starfish Sport, Alexandra Football Academy and Free the Youth taking part in the Discovery Walk-the-Talk will receive support from Laureus. Another Laureus project, Little Champs, will be showcasing their work at the Marks Park stadium.

Now in its ninth year, the 2006 Discovery 702 Walk the Talk is expected to draw a record 31 000 participants.

Top local performers like Denim, Louis Carver and James Steward will keep the crowds entertained and the public is urged to bring along picnic baskets to enjoy the day.

A limited number of entries will be available at the registration desk at the Marks Park Sports Club from 19 July.
