Tax D-day is here again

A reminder from the South African Revenue Service to taxpayers: make sure all your documents are in by Friday, 14 July.

July 13, 2006

By Anish Abraham

JOBURG residents should ensure that their tax returns have been properly completed and submitted on time, preferably ahead of the deadline on Friday, 14 July, to speed up processing, says the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

Registered taxpayers should ensure that the following documents have been attached along with their tax return forms:

  • An IRP5 certificate from their employer
  • A medical aid statement (if applicable)
  • Any Retirement Annuity contribution certificates (if applicable)
  • An IT3(b) form from financial institution (if applicable)
  • All supporting documentation to substantiate claims
To make the process easier, SARS has been increasing the ways in which taxpayers can submit their returns, namely via mail, their offices or the internet.

Registered taxpayers who wish to submit their tax returns online can do so at the SARS e-Filing website.

In future, SARS clients will no longer need to supply the account number and bank code when making payments; instead they will only have to provide their 19-digit payment reference number and a beneficiary ID, which is linked to a specific type of tax to make payments.

"Those taxpayers who are unable to meet the deadline should phone the call centre of visit the SARS e-Filing website and apply for an extension," says Adrian Lackay, media liaison for SARS.

For more information, contact the SARS call centre on 0861 1212 18.
