THE voter's roll for March's local government elections is now closed and no further registrations can take place.
Although it was announced in November last year, the date for the elections was formally published in the Government Gazette of 6 January 2006.
According to the department of provincial and local government, this was in line with section 24 (2) of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, (Act No. 117 of 1998).
The Act states that the minister, after consulting the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), must call for and set a date for an election of all municipal councils. This notice must be published in the Government Gazette.
This means that the IEC is now able to start finalising the logistics of the elections - including the closing of voter registrations.
According to the IEC there are some 1,7-million voters registered in Johannesburg. There are 109 wards across the city, with 727 voting stations.
