Wet weather to continue

LOCAL law enforcers urge motorists to take care on wet roads around Joburg as the recent rains look set to continue over the next few days.

JOHANNESBURG can expect wet weather for the rest of January, according to the South African Weather Service.

The city saw some heavy rainstorms over the holiday season, with several thunderstorms in the late evenings.

December started somewhat drier than usual, with rains finally arriving after 15 December. A total of 72mm of rainfall was recorded in Johannesburg for December. The average is 105mm.

Traditionally, Joburg's rainy season gets into full swing in January and February.

Today and tomorrow the weather forecasters are predicting 60 percent rainfall, with more thunderstorms expected on Thursday afternoon.

"Things are looking good since and we are expecting moist conditions and more rain this month," says Siyabonga Mthethwa, a forecaster at the South African Weather Service.

This pattern will continue for the next two weeks, with a normal monthly rainfall expected to the end of the month, according to Mthethwa.

Last January 157,5mm of rain was recorded in Johannesburg, with the average being 125mm.

City motorists have been urged to take care on the roads during the rainy season.

In the 24-hour period from Monday, 2 January, to 9am Tuesday morning there were 44 reported road accidents.

"Drivers must stick to the speed limit," urged Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, "because the roads become slippery."

He suggested drivers increase the distance between cars.

There were no rain-related emergencies reported to the Emergency Management Services, according to the department's media liaison officer, Malcolm Midgley.
