THE African National Congress has released its list of candidates for the local government elections to be held on Wednesday, 1 March.
There are 121 councillors on Johannesburg's proportional representation list, with the City's executive mayor, Amos Masondo, at the top.
The City of Johannesburg, which is the country's largest city council, has 217 councillors, made up of 109 ward councillors who are directly elected, and 108 councillors who are elected in terms of a party list system (also known as proportional representation councillors).
In selecting candidates, "more than 400 000 members of the ANC participated in over 2 000 branch meetings", reads a party statement.
City Speaker Nandi Mayathula-Khoza and 11 members of the mayoral committee are also on the list. A total of 109 candidates are on the wards list.
The party is aiming to ensure that 50 percent of ANC public representatives in local government are women, according to the statement. "This commitment has meant that some male sitting councillors were not returned as candidates.
"Consequently, a large number of ANC councillors (more than 50 percent), will be standing as candidates for the first time. The ANC is also proud of the fact that a large number of our candidates are young people," the statement adds.
The Democratic Alliance too has announced its candidates' list. Johannesburg branch leader, Mike Moriarty, is the candidate for the position of mayor.
A total of 82 councillors are on the DA's proportional representation list, while 109 candidates are standing in wards across the city.
Oscar Maseko is being punted as the Inkatha Freedom Party's mayoral
candidate in Johannesburg. The party will also be contesting all the wards
in the city.
Mayoral candidate for the Independent Democrats is Mervyn Cirota.
Preparations for the 1 March elections are well under way at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), with the commission scrutinising the candidates' lists and ensuring all parties comply with all the requirements of the Municipal Electoral Act.
The certification of the party lists as well as the ward candidates contesting the elections will take place on 30 January, according to IEC provincial officer Sy Mamabolo.
The next step is to print the ballot papers.
