A MAJOR part of Bryanston looks set to become a City Improvement District later this year.
At present the precinct – between William Nicol Drive, Sloane Street, Main Road and Bryanston Drive – has been launched as a Voluntary Improvement District, under the auspices of Kagiso Urban Management.
The precinct management is working closely with the City of Johannesburg to improve the locale, particularly focusing on assisting local businesses, crime prevention and traffic calming.
The Voluntary Improvement District project was launched last November. Since then "crime has been reduced in the area", says Kagiso's precinct manager, Tina White.
As part of the initiative, one crime prevention vehicle patrols 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
White says they are working closely with the South African Police Service in Randburg as well as with the Johannesburg Metro Police.
The Bryanston precinct was previously a residential area but it has been rezoned into a business area. Several business headquarters are based within the precinct, including Microsoft, Tiger Brands, National Brands and Dimension Data Campus.
While the City provides normal municipal services such as refuse collection in identified improvement districts, property owners voluntarily pay levies to fund extra services to upgrade the area. Extras would include safety and security patrol officers, pavement cleaning, and the further maintenance of public spaces.
Currently there are six security guards and two cleaners maintaining the area.
Kagiso Urban Management is responsible for other City improvement districts, including Randburg, Sandton, the inner city and Braamfontein.
