City celebrates
five years of change

Executive Mayor Amos Masondo takes time to reflect on the past five years of unicity, and looks toward the future of Joburg as a world-class African city.

January 25, 2006

By Ndaba Dlamini

THERE couldn't have been a better place for the City of Johannesburg to savour successes, reflect on challenges overcome over the past five years, and consider the future than the top of the Carlton Centre.

The Marung Restaurant on the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre in downtown Johannesburg presented a stunning backdrop for the launch of Executive Mayor Amos Masondo's report on his term in office.

Describing the report, Reflecting on a Solid Foundation: Building Development Local Government, as "exciting" and a must-read, Council Speaker Nandi Mayathula-Khoza said, "The launch of the report marks an important milestone in the City of Johannesburg. I urge people to read it as it reflects the changing nature of local government in South Africa."

The evening affair, on Tuesday 24 January, saw a range of guests from the Commissioner of the South African Police Service to visitors from Sao Paulo in Brazil.

When Masondo took to the stage he summed up the contents of the report, adding the book was meant to dispel the negative perception of local governments.

Reflecting on a Solid Foundation: Building Development Local Government was a report on Joburg's progress since becoming a unicity five years ago.

"This is not just a book launch in the narrow sense of the word, but a chance for the City to reflect and celebrate achieved goals. People will be able to read and identify with the work done in the past five years and avoid falling into the same pitfalls."

The book was dedicated to all the City's policing and emergency services workers who lost their lives during the course of duty over the last five years, Masondo said.

After his speech, the Afro Tenors wowed the audience with some opera classics.

After a multi media presentation detailing the achievements of the City over the last five years was beamed on two screens for the guests, Johannesburg's city manager, Pascal Moloi, commended all involved in publishing the book for a job well done.

After the formalities, the guests sat back and enjoyed a scrumptious meal and an evening of entertainment.
