HOMEGROWN South African theatre is alive and well, as evidenced by the myriad productions staged at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July each year. Many of these travel the country afterwards, often ending up at Johannesburg's famous Market Theatre at the Newtown Cultural Precinct, or at the Civic Theatre in Braamfontein.

From Shakespearean tragedy to pop musicals and hypnotism, the year kicks off with something for everyone on the theatre diary.

IT IS said that you should always start as you mean to carry on – so start 2006 with a bit of music, love, laughter and dance.

Joburg’s various theatres have lined-up a host of shows, from Joseph Clark musicals to Shakespearean tragedy at the Tesson Theatre, and from the return of The Merry Widow at the Nelson Mandela Theatre to hypnotism by Andre at the Montecasino Theatre.

The Market Theatre
The iconic theatre was opened in 1976, by the late Barney Simon and Mannie Manim, in Joburg’s original fruit and vegetable market. Out of this, three theatres have grown: the Barney Simon, the Main and the Laager.

The Main Theatre
Elephant is a story for all ages, told through music and dance, by nine humans, five musicians and two elephants. It is about Chief Zanemvula, who is certain that he is on his way to heaven, but is rejected at the gates for something he did in his youth.

With the help of his brother and the elephants, the chief makes peace with his ancestors and is allowed to enter heaven. The acclaimed play is directed by Ozzie Riley and Simon Tarrant and is on until 29 January.

The Laager Theatre
Coal Yard is about a young man who runs away from home after his father sexually abuses him. On his travels he forms friendships, falls in love and finds work in a coal yard. The show is directed by Ofentse Bodibe and Prince Lamla and runs on from 31 January to 25 February.

Tesson Theatre
One of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, Macbeth explores witchcraft, ghostly manifestations, murder and revenge and is presented by the Actors Centre. It runs from 15 February to 11 March.

Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre
