Joburg Water
probes child's death

THE City's water utility is investigating allegations that a six-year-old was electrocuted while drinking from a tap.

JOBURG Water has launched a full investigation into allegations that Oprah Rapuleng, a six-year-old girl from Soweto, was electrocuted while drinking tap water.

It is alleged that Oprah, from White City, Jabavu, was playing with friends on Thursday, 5 January at a neighbour's house. She went to drink some water from a tap, when she was electrocuted.

The City's water and sanitation service provider has appointed an independent company of electrical consultants to look into the electrical infrastructure on the property to determine whether there was any connection between the tap and the electrocution of Oprah.

"Another team consisting of engineers from City Power and Eskom are also currently investigating the cause of the tragedy," said Johannesburg Water spokesperson Jameel Chand.

The findings from both teams are expected to be completed in a week's time and will be announced as soon as they are available.

"We are confident that the findings of both investigations will clear the allegations made by certain groups that work carried out as the result of Operation Gcin'amanzi resulted in the tragedy," Chand said.

"We wish to express our condolences to the family and loved ones of Oprah Rapuleng."

The young girl was buried in Soweto on Tuesday, 10 January.
