A MASSIVE clean up campaign is underway in Soweto, with Pikitup set to clear 100 illegal dumping spots.

The City's waste management company has joined forces with Johannesburg Water, the Johannesburg Roads Agency, City Power, Johannesburg City Parks, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the environmental health department to combat illegal dumping.

Region 10's 100 Spots campaign was launched on Thursday, 23 February.

"Illegal dumping is Soweto's Region 10 is a serious concern that demands a lot of our resources in terms of time, people and equipment," said Pikitup's central camp waste depot manager, Hannes Niehaus.

"The 100 Spots project not only focuses on clearing illegal dumping but also informs people about the negative effects of illegal dumping on the environment and one's general health."

Pikitup has encouraged the community to play their part in safeguarding their environment.

"No dumping" signs have also been erected in all the identified illegal dumping spots.

As part of the campaign Pikitup has distributed pamphlets in the area educating the community on how to dispose rubbish correctly.

"Through environmental education we hope that those responsible for illegal dumping will stop this practice," Niehaus said.

"Our intention is to educate people in these spots on what to do to protect them," added Region 10's acting director, Linda Ngwenya.

"JMPD is there to prosecute all those who dump on illegal sites." Those guilty of illegal dumping face a jail sentence or a fine of up to R2 000.

Residents are encouraged to contribute to the 100 spots project by reporting any illegal dumping to Pikitup's call centre on 011 712 5200 or to Joburg Connect on 011 375 5555.
