IF the only way you can manage a bit of exercise is if it's mixed with fun, then the Zoo Trot is just the thing.
The Johannesburg Zoo has hosted the fun family event on the second Sunday of the month for the past three years. The first Zoo Trot of the year takes place on Sunday, 12 February.
The 5km/10km race will be held at the zoo, along a designated course marked out with tracks.
"We just want people to come and enjoy the whole experience of being outdoors. At the same time they get to keep fit and see the wonderful animals we have here," says the zoo's marketing co-ordinator, Senzo Ngcobo.
All participants pay R20 to enter the race, and this also gives them automatic entry to see the animals.
The first 50 people to finish will be given medals depicting the Animal of the Month. "Each month we choose an animal that we want to highlight."
"Many people don't know much about some of the animals we have here," says Ngcobo, "so the point is to teach the public about the lives of these animals – their habitats and what they eat."
February's Animal of the Month is the Bontebok, a rare species of antelope only found in southern Africa. The zoo has two families of three.
The race starts at 7.30am and registration takes place on the day.
