Zoo keeps
a close eye on traffic

Animal eyes will be painted on the Joburg Zoo's perimeter wall, keeping a watch over passing traffic.

WHEN you drive past the Johannesburg Zoo in the future you may be forgiven if you think you're being watched.

The zoo is in the process of having animal eyes, among other images, painted on to the perimeter wall. Artists from graphics company Wallscapes Painting Studio came up with a series of suggestions for the zoo, according to zoo spokesperson Senzo Ngcobo.

However, he pointed out, initially only two blocks along the wall will be painted. "We are asking members of the public and other stakeholders to comment before we paint all the blocks."

The paintings are being donated by Wallscapes. "We want to encourage people to visit the zoo," says the company's project manager, Duwayn Rudman.

The chairperson of the Parktown and Westcliff Heritage Trust, Flo Bird, described the paintings as "a good advertising strategy for the zoo", adding that people should be able to decide whether they liked the paintings once the two blocks were complete.

Painting began on Thursday, 9 February, with the artists doing preliminary sketches on the wall. Once these are in place the actual painting will be undertaken and should be complete by Saturday, 11 February.

Comments on the paintings can be sent to info@jhbzoo.org.za. For more information call the Johannesburg Zoo on 011 646 2000.
