IF YOU are downtown during lunch, the best way to spend the hour is listening to relaxing guitar melodies at a lunchtime concert at the Johannesburg Public Library.
A free lunch hour concert is planned for Thursday, 16 February with a performance from classical guitarist Michal George. The library is in the city centre, on Beyers Naude Square.
George will be playing works by Leo Brouwer, JS Bach and Agustin Barrios Mangore.
According to the programme notes, the award-winning musician has received high praise from audiences around the world for his laidback solo recitals.
He studied at the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand, later studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the US. Among his teachers were David Hewitt and Fritz Buss and composer Carl van Wyk.
Michal won the 2002 Web Concert Hall 4th International Competition and the 1994 National Classical Guitar Competition of the Classical Guitar Society of South Africa. He was also a silver medallist in the Forte Competition in Pretoria.
In 2001 he recorded his first album, Umzwangedwa, a fusion of contemporary South African music and classical music. His follow up CD features South African composers Stanley Glasser and Peter Klatzow, among others. It was recorded in 2003 by German label Daminus Records.
On hearing George perform Rodrigo's Fantasia para un Gentilhombre with the Wits Symphony Orchestra in 1996, conductor Walter Mony said, "Michal George evinces and projects an infectious enthusiasm for the ethos of the guitar."
Librarian Pat Tsotetsi says the lunch hour concert will not be a once-off event. "Follow up concerts will take place in April."
The concert is on from 1.10pm to 2pm at the Performing Arts Library at the central library on Beyers Naude Square. For more information contact Pat Tsotetsi on 011 870 1260.
