Carols on the Square will be an African style Christmas celebration

Carols on the Square will be an African style Christmas celebration

Sing in the festive
spirit at carols

Everyone loves carols by candlelight, and there are still a few more to go before Christmas Day dawns.

December 7, 2006

By Michael Tsingo

NOTHING says, "It's Christmas" quite like carols by candlelight. While the first wave of the family events are over, there are still a few more on the calendar.

There is Carols on the Square at the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton; Carols in the Garden at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort; the 94.7 Highveld Stereo Carols by Candlelight at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northgate; and the B&B Markets Rooftop Carols in Rosebank.

Carols on the square
Nelson Mandela Square hosts its annual - and now quite famous - carols at 7pm on 7 December. Heinz Winckler, the Soweto Gospel Choir and the Soweto String Quartet will join in.

The square offers an African-style Christmas celebration with some of the city's finest restaurants serving up delicious grub and more than 100 decorated trees that will stay up until 11 December.

The entrance fee is a toy, old or new; the toys will be donated to child-headed households as part of radio station Jacaranda FM's Christmas Toy Story drive.

Carols in the garden
With the backdrop a quiet Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, carols from the Welsh Male Voice Choir and the Soweto Opera Quadro will get even Scrooge into a festive mood.

Carols in the Garden starts at 7pm on 9 and 10 December. But bring the kids at 5pm to listen to the Festival Band and an entertaining ventriloquist.

Donations of toys, food or clothing for the needy are welcome. Entrance is R30 for adults, R20 for seniors and R10 for students. Pre-school children are free. For more information phone 011 958 1750.

Carols at the dome
Again at the Northgate Coca-Cola Dome, radio station 94.7 Highveld Stereo hosts Carols by Candlelight together with the Soweto String Quartet.

Leading South African musicians Tima Reece, Kurt Herman, Denim, Watershed, Wonderboom, Cassette, Garth Taylor, Fevertree, Fahrenheit, NKD and the Soweto String Quartet backing choir, as well as the Highveld DJs, will sing along.

The event begins at 5pm and runs until 9pm, and entrance is free. The family comedy Over the Hedge will be screened at 5.30 pm. Candles and song sheets will be sold for charity by the Round Table, which is the benefiting charity.

For more information contact 94.7 Highveld Stereo on 011 794 5800 or send an email to infor@coca-coladome.co.za

Carols on the roof
The B&B Markets Rooftop in Rosebank will host carols at 10am on 17 December, again with the Soweto String Quartet.

The Soweto String Quartet makes a welcome return to the popular rooftop market, playing well-known Christmas Carols and tracks from the band's latest CD from noon to 1.30pm.

Estelle Mostert will perform a selection of rock and pop melodies in the Food Court from 11.30am. For the young ones, Father Christmas will stroll around the market from 10am to 4pm, handing out treats.

Entrance is free. B&B Markets Rooftop is at The Mall, Cradock Avenue, Rosebank. For more information call B&B Markets on 011 442 4488.
