AT last, after 24 years the City has published a new guide to walking in its many green spaces.
Entitled simply "Johannesburg walking trails", it details 25 trails – mostly the old favourites, like Zoo Lake, The Wilds, Kloofendal Nature Reserve and Delta Park, but also some new ones, like Golden Harvest in Northgate and Harvey Park in Cyrildene.
A glossy fold-out brochure, it has everything you need to inspire you to pull on your takkies, plonk a hat on your head, grab the sunblock and head for the outdoors.
Clear maps on either side give you an idea of where the reserves and parks are. Each trail has its own map, with the walk marked in stippled lines, plus a short description of the reserve or park, what you're in for, how to get there, and illustrated with two or three photographs. Symbols indicate what's available at your chosen site. There is also an urban trail code and safety guidelines.
The picturesque Braamfontein Spruit features in the Johannesburg walking trails guide
There are three walking trails down sections of the Braamfontein Spruit, starting at Emmarentia Dam and going all the way to Bryanston. Like all the trails, safety in numbers is encouraged.
Interestingly, it includes the Braamfontein and Brixton cemeteries, my favourite places of exploration and discovery. You're encouraged to go in groups to these old cemeteries, but also to tune into the walking tours of the cemeteries offered periodically by the Parktown and Westcliff Heritage Trust.
Jenny Moodley, the manager of media relations for Johannesburg City Parks, who commissioned the brochure, says her department is very keen to get feedback and comment from the public. "We also want feedback on any sightings, like birds or special plants."
The brochures are free and are available from the facility manager at the parks, or one can be popped in the post if you phone 011 712 6600 or e-mail jcp@cpcitypark.com. You can also give feedback via this number and e-mail address.
Moodley acknowledges the input and encouragement to produce the brochure given by Tim Hartwright, chairman of the Footprint Hiking Club.
Future editions will include any new and edited information received from hikers, Moodley says, adding that she is very happy with the brochure, and thanks all those who have supported its production.
