Psyched for Science competition opens

Joburg needs scientists if it wants to stay ahead in today's technology-driven world, and Psyched for Science shows learners how science can be fun.

LEARNERS who are passionate about science are encouraged to take part in the third annual Joburg Libraries Psyched for Science competition.

The City's libraries unit launched the competition in 2005 to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics as subject choices by learners to follow careers in the sector.

Learners are able to show off their scientific and technological abilities by entering science models they have built. The model building competition targets learners from grade eight to grade 12, while primary school learners from grades six and seven are encouraged to enter the science quiz competition.

"The learners can enter as individuals or as a group of no more than four members," says Maryna Moolman, the Psyched for Science competition co-ordinator. "The learners should build a model that demonstrates and analyses one or more forms of energy, advantages and disadvantages of the various processes with the consideration of harmful or ecologically unfriendly by products."

Last year about 100 models were entered into the competition. There are two legs to it - the first is regional; these winners then compete in the city-wide finals.

Winning models from the regional finals will be displayed during the main part of the competition, during National Science Week. It runs from Monday, 14 May to Friday, 18 May 2007. Overall winners will be selected during that week.

For National Science Week, Joburg Library and Information Services will bring together stakeholders such as the City's utilities and agencies, universities and other science institutions for exhibitions, workshops and science demonstrations.

"This is to encourage the learners to take up careers in science and technology because without scientists there is no future," Moolman concludes.

Entry forms for the competition can be obtained from any public library in Joburg or from schools from the second week in January 2007.
