IT'S the summer holidays and parents across the city are planning a host of activities for their children.
And they should not miss the Gerard Sekoto Youth Festival at the Johannesburg Art Gallery on 16 December, where they will be introduced to the art world.
"We invite youths from all the regions of Johannesburg to come and experience different art techniques, including painting, drama, film and T-shirt printing," says organiser Precious Ndlovu.
The festival is designed to expose young people between the ages of eight and 25 to the world of art. It grew out of a bequest by the late Gerard Sekoto, one of the country's greatest artists, who donated his Vita Awards prize money to the gallery in 1991 to enable it to do something for children.
Sekoto died in 1993. Since his death the gallery has worked to advance Sekoto's cause for children, and has held an annual event in respect of the artist.
Youngsters taking part in the Gerard Sekoto Youth Festival must register at the Johannesburg Art Gallery at 10am on 16 December. They will be asked to choose a category in which they want to participate, be it painting, drama or film, among others.
However, they are not restricted to this genre and can explore other art forms on the day. In the past the festival has been held on 16 June, national Youth Day, but this year and probably in future it will be on 16 December, national Day of Reconciliation.
Entrance is free. The Johannesburg Art Gallery is on the southern border of Joubert Park; the entrance is on King George's Street. It is open from 10am to 5pm on Tuesday to Sunday, and entrance is free. For more information, phone Precious Ndlovu on 011 725 3130.
