New homes for
50 Orange Farm women

Good vibes resounded through Orange Farm as the first of 50 women saw finishing touches added to their new homes by women builders in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Women's March.

EIGHTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Lettia Hlogwane sang to a jubilant rhythm on Monday, 7 August as a host of female volunteers set about plastering her new home in Orange Farm.

Hlogwane, who has lived in a two-roomed shack for 11 years, is one of the 50 woman beneficiaries to get low-cost housing as part of Women for Housing's gesture to mark the 50th anniversary of Women's Day. Women for Housing is a non-governmental organisation that trains women to become builders and run their own construction companies.

"I am honoured to have had this house built for me," said Hlogwane, who couldn't contain her joy as media personnel and community members poured into her house. "I'm happy that the nation has come here to witness this."

Director of Vukuzi'bambe Construction, Patience Tula Morapedi, one of the contractors in charge of Woman's Build 2006, said, "The best thing for me is seeing granny [Lettia Hlogwane] happy."

Basadi Together Construction is the other contractor involved in the building of the 50 houses under the banner of Thubelisha, who in 2005 was given a housing contract to build 4 000 subsidised houses in Orange Farm.

Both Vukuzi'bambe Construction and Basadi Together Construction are 100 percent owned by black women.

Amongst the eight volunteers plastering Hlogwane's home was Mumsy Mpofu from Women for Housing, who said she was in love with construction and was very happy to contribute towards the 50th anniversary of Women's Day.

The houses will be handed over at an official function by Gauteng Housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane, together with Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu on Monday, 18 August.
