SCHOOLS and members of the community have been invited to Joburg Zoo to celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, 1 September where they will be treated to a line-up of educational programmes.
The day will serve as part of the week-long celebration of raising awareness about the importance of trees in communities.
Senior marketing co-ordinator for the Johannesburg Zoo, Senzo Ngcobo, said, "It is an important day. It's one of the leading items on our calendar to encourage people to plant more trees."
According to a press statement, trees play a vital role in the health and well-being of communities, as they are sources of building material, oxygen, food, medicine, in addition to scenic beauty.
The educational programmes presented on Arbor Day, will include exhibitions on medicinal plants, animals and habitats, exotic and indigenous plants and talks on environment-related careers.
Minister of water affairs and forestry, Lindiwe Hendricks, will also deliver the country's Arbor Day message at the zoo and hand out certificates to the schools who took part in the 2005 Greening Campaign at the Centenary Lawn and Band Stand.
The day's programme will start at 9am and will end at 12.30 pm. For more information and to book programmes on the Arbor Week Celebrations at the Johannesburg Zoo, please contact Lawrence or Imelda on 011 646 2000 ext. 262 or 083 596 5453.
