JOHANNESBURG'S executive mayor Amos Masondo has been short-listed for this year's prestigious World Mayor Award.

Masondo is one of 50 mayors from around the world in the final round. The original list saw 677 mayors nominated.

The annual World Mayor Award acknowledges mayors who show they "have the vision, the passion and the skills to make their cities amazing places to live in, to work in and to visit", according to the World Mayor website.

This year sees 50 mayors vying for the coveted title: 12 from Asia; 16 from North and South America; 16 from Europe; four from Africa; and two from Australasia.

Masondo is the only mayor of a South African municipality to make it on the short-list.

Last year the mayor of Athens, Dora Bakoyannis, won the award.

According to the organisers, the awards aim to recognise mayors who have good administrative abilities, are able to provide safety and security and protect the environment and have the ability to foster good relations between communities from different cultural, racial and social backgrounds.

Masondo was nominated because of his commitment to fighting the HIV and Aids epidemic and for leading efforts to revive the inner city, making it "attractive to business and preparing it for the 2010 Football World Cup".

From the African continent, Masondo will be up against three other finalists: Eneas Comiche of Maputo, Mozambique, Abbès Mohsen of Tunis, Tunisia and Patrick Ramiaramanana of Antananarivo in Madagascar.
