KWAITO lovers will be treated to a sizzling three-hour performance, featuring leading lights of the genre, when the Cell C Sound of the City gets under way.
The annual music concert, staged in partnership with Motorola, is set to take place at the Standard Bank Arena in Doornfontein on Saturday, 2 September at 8pm.
This year's concert, dubbed The Kwaito Experience, will feature South Africa's top-selling and award-winning artists including DJ Oskido, Arthur, Thebe, Trompies and Bongo Maffin, who are still rocking the music scene, as well as the new school of big name artists like Zola and Brickz who've changed the face and sound of local music.
"This year we're exploring new dimensions to the Cell C Sound of the City in tune with the Motorola concept, but still presenting artists in a slamming three-hour showcase," says sponsorship manager at Cell C, Gareth Gordon Davis.
"Kwaito was born on the streets of Johannesburg and it spawned a lifestyle that continues to excite and evolve," adds Davis.
A giant state-of-the-art full colour LCD screen will form the backdrop for each artist and DJs will chart the history of kwaito mixing images from all the music videos of the genre over the past 10 years with live music performances and graphics.
The artists will perform their top three hits; DJ Oscar will be on the turntables, mixing through the changeovers and into the new sets - no words, just a musical MC.
"Kwaito has accomplished a revolution…creating demand for new types of parties, clothing, magazines, gossip columns and of course, radio stations. It is the voice of young people," says Davis.
Tickets are available at Computicket for R50. For more information, visit the Cell C Sound of the City with Motorola website on www.soundofthecity.co.za
