Wet weather here to stay

Local law enforcers urge motorists to take care on wet roads around Joburg as the recent rains look set to continue until the Weekend

THE cold and rainy weather conditions being experienced around Johannesburg will continue until Saturday and motorists have been warned to exercise caution on the roads.

Forecaster Bransby Bulo from the South African Weather Services (SAWS) says the conditions will persist, with the city experiencing cloudy and cold weather until the weekend. "We expect the weather to clear from Saturday onwards".

Today, the weather forecasters are predicting 60 percent chances of rainfall with showers expected on Friday.

According to Bulo, the cold and rainy weather has been brought on by an upper level low-pressure system which will remain over the western parts of South Africa. "North-westerly and northerly winds associated with this low pressure system are bringing moisture over the western and central parts of the country extending to the southern parts of the north-eastern areas."

Bulo says the current weather conditions are expected for this time of the year.

Slippery roads have wreaked havoc on the roads, with 20 accidents reported on Johannesburg roads by Thursday morning. Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane, says motorists should exercise caution because of the slippery conditions on the roads. "Drivers are advised to keep a safe following distance."

There were no serious rain-related incidents reported to the City's Emergency Management Services though, according to the department's media liaison officer, Malcolm Midgely.

"We attended to several car accidents this morning between 7 and 7,30am which did not involve any fatalities."
