Gauteng's bullet train gamble
THE highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria is the busiest in the southern hemisphere, carrying 300 000 passengers each week day between the country's commercial heart and its administrative capital. Not surprisingly, it takes no more than one accident, or one bad rain storm, and traffic can be snarled up for two hours in either direction.

Three alignments to Gautrain approved

Three new alignments approved for the 80km, high-speed Gautrain are open for viewing and appeal by the public.

August 23, 2006

By Lucille Davie

THREE Gautrain alignments to a 2004 decision have been approved by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment (GDACE), and now await public approval.

The Bombela Consortium, the company chosen to construct the Gautrain, proposed variant alignments to the Record of Decision (ROD) of 25 April 2004. The alignments were approved on 15 August and consist of the following:

  • a tunnelled alignment between Mushroom Farm Park in Sandton and the M1 that largely runs beneath Katherine Drive instead of beneath Strathavon;
  • a lower alignment from the Marlboro tunnel portal across the Jukskei River valley beneath the N3 highway; and
  • a raised alignment over the R21/R24 interchange between Rhodesfield Station and the Johannesburg International Airport (JIA) station.
The public can view the ROD on www.gautrain-env.co.za or www.gautrain.co.za, or at the venues below.

Construction of the 80km, high-speed Gautrain between Park Station in Joburg and Hatfield Station in Tshwane, and the Johannesburg International Airport has begun, with road closures in Sandton and Rosebank, in place for around four years, soon to be a reality of everyday life for Joburgers.

Residents are requested to call the Gautrain toll-free number - 0800Gautrain or 0800 428 872 46 - to report any major incidents.
