As it celebrates its 30th birthday, the Rockies race will for the first time see able-bodied athletes run alongside paraplegics through the suburbs of Saxonworld and HydePark on 10 September.

PARAPLEGICS and able-bodied athletes will take to the road as the annual Rockies race gets underway at the Johannesburg Zoo on Sunday 10 September.

Now in its 30th year, the race will for the first time include wheelchair athletes, with a separate start time and prize money. "It is very important to do this, because not many clubs are involved in such an initiative," said Ivan Schewuitz, Chairman of the Waverly-based Rocky Road Runners club, who organised the race.

The race will feature a 21km half marathon, a walkers' 21km and 10km and a 10km road race and 5km fun run.

The race is run in memory of Gerald Fox, a prominent runner and philanthropist who died in 2003.

Schewuitz said, "Our motivation is to include all the communities".

Schewuitz emphasised the importance of running, saying that people should join in on the race to avoid obesity and other negative health-related issues. "It is important to run especially when individuals grow older."

According to Schewuitz, two other races of this kind were held in George and Port Elizabeth.

"I would like to see other clubs joining to cater for the paraplegic and wheelchair races," adds Schewuitz

The races will start and end at the Johannesburg Zoo, following a route through the leafy suburbs of Saxonwold and Hyde Park.

Medals will be awarded to all finishers, T-shirts to all pre-entries, and runners can also enjoy free entry to the zoo until 10am. Spot prizes will also be available.

The races will begin with the paraplegic category at 7am, followed by the 21km and 10km race at 7.10am, the walkers' 21km and 10km at 7.15am and the 5km fun run at 7.40am. Parking space for athletes will be available close to the starting point.

Parking space for athletes will be available close to the start.
