Athletes line up
for Vodacom race

The fifth annual Vodacom Country Challenge, which starts and ends at Vodaworld in Midrand on 20 August, promises a challenging fun-filled day for the whole family.

ABOUT 6 000 athletes are expected to line up for the fifth annual Vodacom Country Challenge on Sunday, 20 August.

The race offers runners a choice of a half marathon or 10km run, with total prize money of R12 150 being allocated for the 21,1km race and R7 100 to the 10km race.

"It was a very tough race last year, but I managed to challenge some of the best runners in the country," says last year's winner of the 21km race, Enos Matalane. "I encourage everyone to come out and have some fun for a worthy cause."

A portion of the race proceeds will go towards the development of talented athletes from the Powerade Athletic Club and to the Endangered Wildlife Trust.

But, it's not just a day for the athletes. The Vodacom Country Challenge is also a day for the family, with a 5km fun run on the bill. "It promises to be a fun-filled day that can be spent in the open air with family and friends," says Dot Field, Vodacom Group's chief communication officer.

There will be music by DJ Marco along with a beer garden. Jumping castles will also be set up for the children. "Participants and spectators can even meet the Vodacom Bull Babes and Mo the Meerkat," says Field.

Although pre-entries have closed, runners can enter on the day of the race, with registration tables opening from 6.30am. Entry fees are R40 for the 21,1km race and R20 for the 10km run.

For those who have already entered race numbers can be collected from the soccer field at Vodaworld on:

  • Friday, 18 August from noon to 6pm
  • Saturday, 19 August between 10am and 6pm
  • Sunday 20, August between 6am and 7.45am

The race starts and ends at Vodaworld in Midrand, with the start set for 7am.
