THE final leg of the Women in Arts Festival, a branch of the City of Johannesburg's Arts Alive Festival, draws to a close on Sunday, 13 August and the last two days of the festival of dance, photography, music, theatre and poetry promise to be explosive.

On Saturday, 12 August, the Bassline will host a poetry session at 7.30pm, She Speaks, a poetic discussion about African womanhood. Napo Masheane, Phillipa Yaa de Villiers and Myesha Jenkins will be sharing the stage with the Bushwomen, Laverne and Tereska Muishond.

Later that evening, at 9pm, a music extravaganza featuring a collaboration between Thandiswa Mazwai, Dorothy Masuka and experimental musician Siya Makuzeni promises fireworks in an event dubbed Women in Arts Collaboration. The trio will make way for R&B sensation, Lira, at 10pm. The cover charge is R50.

Some blocks away at the Horror Café, Japan and I, "an accomplished girl band consisting of the finest young lasses in the punk/pop music genre" will wow crowds. Japan and I, will be joined by Harris Tweed's pop sensations Cherilyn MacNeil and Darryl Torr, and Devis Cartel and Koula & Architecture Alexia will add more flavour to the savoury musical dish. The show starts at 9pm and the cover charge is R30.

Niki's Oasis will host Octavia Rachabane for a two-hour show starting at 9pm and Kwani Experience, an exciting eight-piece band hailing from the inner city of Johannesburg, is set to be a knockout at Shivava Café. Both shows are free to the public.

On the last day of the 2006 Women in Arts Festival, the Market Theatre presents the last performance of Flipping the Script, a play dealing with issues of female sexuality and gender violence. It is written by Catherine Mlangeni, Zubeda Dangor, Nonzi Bogatsu, Dorothy Brislin and Bobby Rodwell.

Conceived, produced and directed by Bobby Rodwell, Flipping the Script features veteran actor Connie Mfuku, with Charlotte Butler, Leeanda Reddy and Nomonde Mbusi. Tickets for the final show are R65.
