The session, which started with a tour of the Cradle of Humankind, a world heritage site, is part of the Heritage Lekgotla series that kicked off in October 2005. The programme aims to attract heritage practitioners and the public.

According to a Constitution Hill press release, the series focuses on exploring contemporary strategies and issues such as heritage and place-making, notions of public space and public involvement, the arts and the relation between recreation and heritage.

Brett Pyper, the director of the Wits department of arts, culture and heritage management studies, says that the discussion will "conceptualise South African debates within a broader pan-African perspective".

Participants will include post-graduate students and lecturers from the Wits School of Arts.

A representative of the Observatory of Cultural Policies in Africa, an organisation that collects and disseminates cultural information in Africa, will present the keynote address, Cultural policy in Africa.

Pyper says that the collaboration between the arts, culture and heritage programme at Wits and Constitution Hill aims to bring researcher practitioners and the public together to discuss topics of common concern relating to transformation and development in the sector.

The panel includes representatives from the African Union and Unesco, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

Danielle Melville, Constitution Hill's programmes manager, says that "the tour [at the Cradle of Humankind] will see participants being shown how the site operates and how the site runs its exhibitions".

Participation in the tour and the discussion is free. The tour began at Maropeng in the morning, and the two-hour discussion starts at 3pm, at the Women's Jail at Constitution Hill.
