Burst pipe causes
water shortages

A pipe on the main line from Yeoville reservoir has burst, causing water shortages in the city's eastern suburbs. However, Joburg Water is busy fixing the problem.

April 3, 2006

By Emmanuel Mulaudzi

A WATER pipe on the main line from the Yeoville reservoir burst in the early hours of this morning, affecting the city's eastern suburbs.

The reservoir is at the corner of Currey and Von Beek streets in Doornfontein, in the east of the city. The affected suburbs are Yeoville, Hillbrow, Berea, Bertrams, Kensington, Doornfontein, Cyrildene, Joubert Park, Observatory, Jeppestown and surrounding areas.

However, the 0,9m pipe is not the only one to have burst recently. On Saturday night, 1 April, a water pipe burst in Mooi and Anderson streets, causing water shortages in downtown Joburg on Sunday.

That pipe has been repaired. Regarding the Yeoville problem, Joburg Water's communications and marketing manager, Jameel Chand, said, "Our team is busy fixing the problem and we hope that everything will be solved in the afternoon."

He also urged people to use water sparingly.

"Johannesburg Water wishes to apologise to the residents in affected areas and undertakes to have the interruption resolved as soon as possible," reads a statement from the City's water utility.
