BURSARIES have been allocated to deserving students to study through the University of the Witwatersrand's Access for Success Programme. The 20 students started their studies in early February.

The City and co-ordinators from Wits were involved in the selection process to ensure transparency and to ensure deserving students were the beneficiaries.

"Students were selected based on financial background and their marks in maths and English," said Pat Telela, of the City's skills and development programme. "Orphaned students were asked to bring affidavits to make sure all the facts were true."

According to a City report, the students receive substantial academic support in the form of two experienced tutors, who each provide six hours of consultation a week in mathematics and social sciences.

"Even though is too early to report on the students' performance, the attendance is excellent and we are generally pleased with [them]," said Charles Dugmore, the co-ordinator of the Access for Success programme at Wits.

Those who received the bursaries are Sifiso Dlamini, Sibusiso Magasela, Bhekumuzi Maphalala, Rebecca Mathebula, Itumeleng Modise, Thapelo Mofolo, Seapei Mogoane, Ignatius Mokhabela, Mpho Mokoena, Elliot Moleba, Vuyiswa More, Boitumelo Mosaka, Lebogang Mpudi, Phuthuma Mvovo, Nonhlanhla Ngwenya, Lesego Rampoine, Charmaine Seboledisho, Thabang Sekele, Zestah September and Tshepo Sihlangu.

The majority of are from townships such as Soweto, Tembisa, Kagiso and Dobsonville, while three are from Mokopane, Orchards and Weillersfarm.

"Regular progress meetings will be held with the co-ordinators and bursary recipients, with the first scheduled for May," Telela said.

The Access for Success Programme was launched early this year as an alternative route into bachelor of arts and commerce degrees. The course provides young adults with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the workplace.
