THE City of Johannesburg will add another first to its list when it becomes the only municipality to have an exhibition stand at the Rand Show.
Dealing with the milestones the City has achieved in the past five years, the exhibition will be in Hall Five, the section of the Rand Show dedicated to exhibitions by businesses and government departments.
Apart from telling the story of the transformation of local government, the exhibition will also highlight the many successful projects Johannesburg has completed in the past five years. It will include photographs, text panels and audio clips and is targeted at citizens, ratepayers and stakeholders, or anyone who has an interest in local government.
One of its aims is to represent accurately the City's history, challenges and successes in the hope that this will alter perceptions of poor and slow delivery by municipalities across the country.
"We thought that there could be no better way of standing up in front of our citizens, stakeholders and public at large to account for what the City of Johannesburg has been doing on behalf of the citizens in the past five years," says City spokesperson Nthathisi Modingoane.
"It is likely to get its audience to think again about negative perceptions of local government both in Johannesburg and other cities and towns."
Teresa Setta, the show's communication manager, says that Johannesburg's stand is "one of the most spectacular, yet educational exhibition stands we have at the Rand Show this year. This is the first time ever that we are hosting an exhibition stand from a local government and we are excited that Johannesburg is a trendsetter."
The Rand Show, the continent's biggest consumer show that also features the best in entertainment, takes place from 14 April to 1 May.
Tickets are R45 for adults and R20 for children under the age of 12. Entrance is free for senior citizens, provided they can produce a valid ID. Children under the age of two are also free.
For those who don't make it to the show, the City of Johannesburg's exhibition will be at the Carlton Centre from 8 to 21 May.
