Market Establishment Company lands
Newtown contract

The contract to manage and operate the Newtown flea market has been awarded to the Market Establishment Company in a bid to formalize the trade.

April 11, 2006

By Shamin Chibba

THE Market Establishment Company has been awarded the contract to operate the Newtown flea market.

The tender for the contract was put out by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) in 2005, and was awarded in April 2006.

Newtown, in the city centre, is the centre of arts and culture in Johannesburg and the agency has taken steps to improve business in the area, making it a viable spot for selling items of cultural significance.

According to the JDA spokesperson, Tshepo Nkosi, there was a need to formalise the flea market business in the area. "A lot of things in Newtown were informal. We want to attract professional flea market managers so they can add value to [the market]. We [also] want to support South African-made arts and crafts and support local businesses in the area."

The contract was to manage and regulate the businesses in the flea market, as they were situated on public land.

Since the JDA began economic development in Newtown, audiences at the various venues in the area rose from 239 000 in 2003 to over 400 000 in 2005.

The City's property and land assets manager, the Johannesburg Property Company, works closely with the agency in the suburb and oversees the property in Newtown.
