JOZI'S rhythm and rhyme are on show at the Arts Alive Speak the Mind poetry sessions at the Songwriters' Club in Newtown this weekend.
The four-hour sessions, described by the organisers as a "hip yet classy and cultured showcase" of spoken word hip-hop, Afro-soul and funk, are a new addition to the Arts Alive festival.
Speak the Mind, according to event publicists Buz Publicity, "is designed as a comprehensive form of spoken word and urban beat escapism from big city activities for people on the fringe".
The sessions, on Friday, 2 September and Saturday, 3 September from 8pm, feature soul heavyweights Kwani Experience and MXO, with DJ Kenzhero spinning retro tunes throughout the evening.
Other artists taking part are Blindfold, Lebo Mashile, Ntsiki Mazwai, Maakomele Manaka, Pitika Ntuli, Keorapetse Kgositsile, Uhuru and Zweli Twalo, and Stanley Kenani and Alfred Msadala of the Malawi Writers' Union.
YFM resident poet Julius Makweru is to host the sessions.
The Songwriters' Club is on the corner of Carr and Quinn streets in Newtown. Tickets are available at Computicket for R15 and at the door for R20. For further information on tickets, bookings and performance times, call 011 673 4995 or 011 673 9272.
